Scottish Country Dancing in the Washington, D.C. Area, the Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia Branches of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society

Candidate Class Proposed

Would you like to be an RSCDS teacher?

A teacher candidate class may start this fall and run through the winter, taught by Elaine Brunken with Ellie and Mel Briscoe. Place, time, duration, cost, other teaching staff, and emphasis will all depend on who is accepted. We'll have an organizational meeting and question-and-answer session early this summer, details TBA.

Candidates should already dance up to the RSCDS standard and only need fine-tuning of their own dancing. We may do some dancing at our organizational meeting, and for those who need it, we'll arrange a couple of workshops this summer to work on personal dancing. Then in the class itself, we'll address the finer points, and concentrate on how to teach, plus study the theory and history of the dance.

If you think you might want to become a teacher, talk to your own regular class teacher and find out more about what's involved in being a teacher, or get in touch with Elaine (, Mel or me ( or call (703) 461-7383. To apply for the course, complete the RSCDS application form and arrange for it and a confidential report from your regular class teacher to be sent to the tutors. Attendance is at the discretion of the tutors. The course syllabus and all forms are on the RSCDS Web site,, in the members' area; the password is available from your branch secretary or Jay Andrews.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may be interested, so we can gauge whether or not to proceed with planning the class. Please call or send me an email as soon as possible. Thanks!
